Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What data backup procedures does Keen IO implement?

A: The short answer is, like in any case in smart computing, it is up to you to back up your data to protect against losses resulting from equipment failure, damage, mistakes, even negligence. We make no claims to keep your data assets recoverable and disclaim all responsibility.

That being said however, for our perational use we implement some basic procedures that are designed to help us "quickly" recover from disasters with as little customer interaction as possible. Under this policy, we make copies of our equipment configuration data for our servers to allow expediant re-configuration of a machine which has suffered configuration loss.

In the case of our shared hosting servers, depending on how much user data is on the machine, we may also make an attempt to create periodically updated mirrors of customer data to be able to draw upon it in case it becomes necessary. If it is ever necessary to draw upon archived customer data, we will notify you by phone or email so that you can check your data for accuracy and recover anything more recent than our archival copy yourself.

The idea of "quickly" recovering is, of course relative. We define quickly as being in the timeframe of 72 hours for restored operation. Worst case scenarios would take one to two weeks to provision equipment, configure it and get it loaded with data again. We make due effort to keep on hand a variety of surplus equipment that will minimize the possibility of a prolonged outage. While we do not guarantee restored operation within 72 hours, that is our goal. Remember, this is in regard to major problems - the majority of operational problems that we encounter are minor and are correctable in 2 hours or less.

In the case of collocated customers or those with managed servers, we can work with you to devise an effective backup strategy that is specific to your needs. By way of our remote hands service, we can even assist with changing out removable media on your machine. Contact us with your requirements and we will give you a free consultation to discuss your options.
